Blue light glasses are everywhere right now. You will see them promoted alongside laptops, marketed to students and remote workers, and offered as an easy fix for tired eyes and broken sleep. The promise is appealing, so it is worth pausing to ask a simple question. Do they actually do what the marketing says?

What is blue light, and where does it come from?
Blue light is simply one part of the visible light spectrum. It is a high-energy visible light, which is why you may see it described as HEV light. It is present in sunlight and is also given off by LED screens such as phones, tablets, computers and televisions.
Here is the part that marketing tends to leave out. By far the largest source of blue light you meet each day is natural daylight. The amount reaching your eyes from a screen is a tiny fraction of what you receive simply by being outdoors, on the order of a thousand times less. That context matters when you are weighing up whether a filter on your glasses will change much.
It is worth separating blue light from ultraviolet light, because the two often get muddled. UV is a genuine concern for long-term eye health, which is why good sunglasses matter. Blue light from screens is a different thing, and the evidence that it harms your eyes is simply not there.
Do blue light glasses actually work?
This is the question most people really want answered, and the research is now reasonably clear. In 2023, the Cochrane review, which is widely regarded as the gold standard for weighing up medical evidence, pulled together 17 randomised controlled trials involving people across six countries. It concluded that blue light filtering lenses probably make little or no difference to eye strain from computer use, and that any effect on sleep quality is unclear.
That finding sits alongside the position held by the College of Optometrists, the professional body for optometrists in the UK. Their view, based on the current best evidence, is that blue blocking spectacle lenses are not supported for the general population as a way to improve vision, ease eye fatigue, improve sleep or protect the macula at the back of the eye.
None of this means blue light glasses are harmful. The trials found that side effects were uncommon and mild. It simply means the headline benefits are not well supported, so it is worth being realistic about what a pair will and will not do for you.
Why the tint matters
Most blue light lenses sold for everyday use are essentially clear. A clear lens can only filter a small portion of blue light. To block a meaningful amount you need a lens with a visible amber or yellow tint, and that tint noticeably shifts how you see colour.
For designers, photographers, clinicians and anyone whose work depends on accurate colour, that is a genuine drawback. It is one of the reasons we always talk through the trade-offs with you rather than simply adding a coating as standard.
So why do some people swear by them?
Plenty of people genuinely feel more comfortable wearing blue light glasses, and that experience is real. It is just that the blue light filtering is usually not the reason. There are a few more likely explanations.
- The anti-reflective coating. Most blue light lenses come with a quality anti-reflective coating, which cuts glare and reflections from screens and overhead lighting. That alone can make screen work feel easier on the eyes, and it has nothing to do with blue light.
- A fresh prescription. People often buy blue light glasses at the same time as a new, up-to-date prescription. The sharper, clearer vision does the real work, not the filter.
- The placebo effect, which is genuine. Expecting relief can produce real, felt comfort. That is not a criticism; it is simply how perception works.
So if your blue light glasses help you, keep wearing them. It is just worth knowing that you can usually get the same comfort from a good anti-reflective coating and a current prescription, without the colour shift that a tint brings. What actually helps with tired eyes
If your eyes feel strained after a long day at a screen, the good news is that the real causes are well understood and very manageable. Digital eye strain usually comes from how we use screens rather than from blue light itself. We tend to blink less, hold a fixed focus for hours, sit with glare or poor lighting, and sometimes wear an out-of-date prescription.
A few simple changes make a noticeable difference.
- Follow the 20-20-20 rule. Every 20 minutes, look at something around 20 feet away for about 20 seconds to let your focusing muscles relax.
- Set up your screen well. Position it slightly below eye level, an arm’s length away, and adjust brightness so it matches the room rather than glowing in a dark space.
- Use night settings in the evening. Features such as Night Shift and Night Light warm the screen colour and are free. Reducing screen time before bed helps sleep more than any lens.
- Blink, and stay comfortable. Concentrated screen work dries the eyes. Regular blinks, breaks and good hydration ease that dry, gritty feeling.
- Check your prescription is current. An outdated or slightly off prescription is one of the most common hidden causes of screen-related headaches and fatigue.
That last point is the one people most often overlook. If screens are leaving you tired or headachy, a thorough eye examination will pick up anything that needs correcting and rule out other causes. It is a far more reliable starting point than a filter.

Is there ever a case for blue light filtering?
It is fair to say the picture is not entirely black and white. For most people, during the day, the evidence for blue light glasses is weak. The more plausible role is in the evening, where some people with sleep or body clock difficulties may find an amber-tinted lens helpful for winding down before bed. Even then, simply spending less time on screens late at night tends to have a bigger effect.

What about children and screens?
Parents often ask us whether their children need blue light glasses for tablets, homework and gaming. The honest answer is the same as it is for adults. There is no good evidence that the blue light from screens harms children’s eyes, and no evidence that blue light glasses protect them.
What does matter for young eyes is the bigger picture of how screens are used. Long stretches of close, fixed focus work and less time spent outdoors are the factors most discussed in relation to the rise in short-sightedness, far more than blue light itself. Regular breaks, plenty of daylight and time outdoors, and sensible screen habits do more for your child’s eyes than any lens coating.
