Every frame in our niche frames collection is chosen by hand, with real thought given to how it will sit, suit and last. Below you will meet five of the independent houses we are proud to stock, the people behind them, and how to tell which one might be yours.

Why independent eyewear is worth the look

There is a quiet difference between a frame made in its thousands and one made in small batches by people who truly care. Independent designers tend to use better materials, take braver decisions with shape and colour, and finish each piece by hand. Anne & Valentin: French colour and character

Anne & Valentin began as a love story in Toulouse. Valentin qualified as an optician in 1980 and opened a shop with his wife Anne, an artist, but the pair soon grew frustrated by how little personality the frames of the day had to offer. So Anne started sketching her own. Their first collection launched in 1984, and more than four decades on, the brand is still proudly independent and still made in France.

What you notice first is the colour. They layer acetate in combinations most makers would never dare, paired with bold, often geometric shapes designed to reveal your character rather than hide it. Sabine Be: fearless frames, hand-made in France

Sabine Be is the work of one determined woman. Sabine Begault-Vagner spent more than thirty years as an optician in Orleans before launching her own label in 2014, close to her fiftieth birthday, after deciding it was finally time to follow a lifelong dream. She designs everything herself, from the frames to the cases, and her signature is a single bold dot at the temple.

Every Sabine Be frame is hand-made in France from high-grade cellulose acetate, with layered colours and playful, geometric shapes that are made to be noticed. If you want eyewear that doubles as a piece of jewellery and says something about you before you do, Sabine Be rarely disappoints.

Nine Eyewear: Danish design, barely-there weight

Founded in Aarhus in 2010 by industry veteran Jens William Sorensen, Nine Eyewear pairs clean Danish design with Japanese craftsmanship. The name is a clue to its obsession: every frame weighs around nine grams, whatever the shape or style.

Each pair is designed in Denmark and hand-finished in Japan from flexible beta titanium, through a process of hundreds of tiny steps. The result is eyewear so light you can almost forget you are wearing it, which makes Nine Eyewear a favourite if comfort matters to you as much as looks, or if you have found heavier frames tiring in the past.

Rolf: sustainable frames from the Austrian Alps

Rolf is a true family affair, started by Roland Wolf and his relatives in a basement workshop in the Tyrolean Alps of Austria. After three years of experimenting, they unveiled their first wooden frames in 2009 and promptly won a Silmo d’Or, one of the industry’s most coveted awards.

Long before sustainability was fashionable, Rolf was hand-making frames from natural materials such as wood, stone, horn and even a plant-based material grown from beans. Their patented hinge uses no screws or metal at all. If you care about where your things come from and want a frame with genuine warmth and a story to tell, the Rolf collection is hard to beat.

SALT.: Californian calm, Japanese precision

SALT. takes its name from Sea, Air, Land and Time, the natural forces that inspire it. Born on the California coast in 2006, the brand sets out to make eyewear that looks effortless yet hides a great deal of care.

Each pair combines custom materials with Japanese craftsmanship and a muted, nature-led palette of earthy tones. The look is understated and timeless rather than flashy, and the construction is built to age gracefully. Can I try frames without booking an eye test?

Of course. You are very welcome to pop in, browse and try on as many frames as you like, with no obligation and no pressure. If you would rather we set aside time for a proper styling session, just get in touch, and we will arrange it.

Do niche frames cost more than high street brands?

Independent frames are made in smaller numbers from better materials, so they often sit above mass-market prices, but the range is broad, and there is something to suit most budgets. Can you fit lenses into a frame I already own?

In many cases, yes. We are happy to look at reglazing frames you love, including pairs bought elsewhere. Bring them in, and we will let you know what is possible.

How do I know which frame suits me?
