Transition Lenses Explained: A Buyer’s Guide
Transition lenses promise something genuinely useful. One pair of glasses that stays clear indoors and darkens in the sun, so you are not forever swapping between your everyday specs and a separate pair of sunglasses.
They suit a lot of people very well. They are not the right answer for everyone, though, and the version you choose makes a real difference to how happy you are with them.
This guide walks you through how transition lenses work, the options available today, where they shine and where they fall short. By the end, you will know whether they are worth it for you, and which type to ask about.

What are transition lenses?
“Transition lenses” is the name most people use, but the proper term is photochromic lenses. Transitions is actually a brand name, in much the same way that Hoover became shorthand for a vacuum cleaner.
The idea is simple. The lenses stay clear in low light and darken automatically in bright sunlight, then fade back to clear once you are out of the sun. In effect, you get prescription glasses and a pair of sunglasses in one.
How do transition lenses work?
Modern photochromic lenses are usually plastic, and they contain tiny light-sensitive molecules called organic photochromic dyes. Older glass lenses used silver-based crystals, but today’s plastic lenses use carbon-based dyes that react faster and clear more quickly.
When ultraviolet (UV) light from the sun reaches these dyes, they change shape and start absorbing more visible light, which is what makes the lens look darker. Take the UV away, and the molecules relax back to their original shape, so the lens clears again.
This happens quickly. Most lenses do much of their darkening within a minute, then clear over a few minutes once you are back indoors.
Two things are worth knowing before you buy, because they catch people out:
| Temperature changes how they perform. Photochromic lenses darken more, and faster, in cold weather. On a very hot day they may not reach full darkness. This is normal physics, not a fault.
They often will not darken in the car. Most windscreens block almost all UV light, and standard photochromic lenses need UV to switch on. So they tend to stay clear, or nearly clear, while you are driving. There are lens types designed to get around this, which we come to below. |
The types of transition lenses available today
Everyday photochromic lenses
The most popular choice and a great all-rounder. They are clear indoors and darken in sunlight, which works well for the office, reading, and being out and about. Transitions GEN S is the current everyday range, and other brands offer similar lenses.
Extra-reactive lenses
Designed for people who are sensitive to light or who spend a lot of time in strong sunlight. They darken further outdoors and keep a faint tint indoors, which many light-sensitive wearers find comfortable. Transitions XTRActive is the best-known example.
Polarised photochromic lenses
These add a polarising filter on top of the self-darkening, which cuts the harsh glare that bounces off wet roads, water and snow. Transitions XTRActive Polarised replaced the older Vantage range that you may still see mentioned online.
Driving lenses
Built specifically for daytime driving. They react behind the windscreen, keep a tint at all times and use polarisation to cut road glare. They are not suitable for night driving or for wearing indoors. Transitions Drivewear is the best-known option here.
The pros and cons, weighed up
We would rather you choose with your eyes open, so here is the honest picture.
What they do well
- One pair does two jobs. No carrying, swapping or hunting for your sunglasses when the sun appears.
- Built-in UV protection. Good photochromic lenses block 100% of UVA and UVB, whether they are clear or dark. That matters because UV exposure is linked to cataracts and possibly to age-related macular degeneration.
- Less squinting. As the light changes through the day, the lenses adapt, which eases the eye strain that comes from bright glare.
- Protection is always on your face. Because they are your everyday glasses, your sun protection is with you the moment you step outside.
- Often good value. One pair can cost less than buying separate everyday glasses and prescription sunglasses, especially if your prescription changes from time to time.
Where they fall short
- They are not a full substitute for sunglasses for everyone. They may not get quite as dark as a dedicated pair, and they take a moment to react.
- Heat reduces how dark they go, so on a hot holiday abroad, they may underperform.
- They take a few moments to clear when you come indoors, so there can be a brief tinted spell.
- There is a small extra cost over standard clear lenses.
For some people, transitions are perfect. For others, a separate pair of prescription sunglasses is the better answer, and that is completely fine.

Who are transition lenses right for?
Transition lenses tend to suit you if:
- You wear glasses most of the time and want sun protection without carrying two pairs
- You move in and out of daylight throughout the day
- You dislike swapping glasses, or you tend to misplace your sunglasses
- You want UV protection built into your everyday lenses
You may be better with a separate pair of prescription sunglasses if:
- You drive a lot in daylight, where driving-specific lenses or dedicated sunglasses work better
- You want the very darkest tint for strong sun or holidays abroad
- You spend long stretches outdoors in hot weather

How to choose the right transition lenses
If you want a simple steer: for most people, an everyday photochromic lens is the right starting point. Step up to an extra-reactive lens only if you are genuinely light-sensitive or spend a lot of time in strong sun. And if you drive a lot in daylight, look at a driving-specific lens or a separate pair of prescription sunglasses.
Beyond that, two things fine-tune the choice:
- Colour. Grey, brown and green each give a slightly different look and feel.
- Budget. There is a range of options, and we will be upfront about the cost before you commit.

Caring for your transition lenses
- Clean them with a microfibre cloth and a proper lens spray, not your shirt or a kitchen towel.
- Store them in a case when they are not on your face.
- Keep them out of very hot places, such as a sunny car dashboard.
- The dyes do fade slowly over the years. If the darkening weakens noticeably, ask us about replacing the lenses.
